Uluru

(pronounced ü lü rü or Oo-la-roo with oo as in boot)
Is the Aboriginal name for one of Australia’s unique landmarks. Meaning ‘great pebble’, it was previously called Ayers Rock and is thought to be the world’s largest monolith. Uluru is located in heart of Australia’s red centre where the ages of landforms are often measured in millions of years.

A coach trip from Adelaide in south Australia takes 21 hours to reach Uluru Resort (this is in the heart of the ‘Outback’) http://mccaffertys.com.au/links/links5/ttable2.html To fly direct from Sydney takes about 3 hours by jet. http://www.ansett.com.au/travel/nt_f.htm

An alternative is to experience one of the world’s famous train journeys Sydney to Adelaide on the Indian Pacific (takes about 24 hours) and then Adelaide to Alice Springs - major town near Uluru- on the Ghan (about 19 hours). The combined trip without a stop-over in Adelaide is about 43 hours.
