Language of the Games

The Games Standard Terminology (or Games Codes) was created to identify, define and codify critical terminology that needed to be synchronised across the Games organising committees to ensure that all staff and required computer applications referred to the correct thing, place person or activity.

The IOC and external organisations set some of the codes, while others are unique to Sydney, such as Venue Codes. Examples of the types of information that was in the Codes System include names of countries, languages, venues, sports, disciplines, events and functional areas.

Also included are:

  • a Games glossary - a collection of terms defined by the organisational unit responsible and consists of terminology used in the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games,
  • a list of commonly used Games, sport and Olympic acronyms.
