THIS IS A PROJECT OF THE ETHNIC AFFAIRS COMMISSION.

Several Olympic street festivals are to take place before and at the start of the Olympic Games period. They are designed to involve the participation of ethnic communities, to celebrate cultural diversity in Sydney, to have fun and to share the Olympic spirit with festival visitors.

    AUBURN ANNUAL STREET FESTIVAL (organised by Auburn Community Development Network)

    Saturday 19 August 2000 from 10 to 4. Queen Street near Auburn Road.

    Transport to the festival: Auburn Station.

    Many cultural groups are performing including Chinese, Vietnamese, Arabic, Somali, Ethiopian,
    Turkish, Baha’i, Bosnians, Ukranians, Romanians and Pacific Islanders.

    15 acts on street stage. Stalls including community information.

    CANTERBURY CELEBRATING THE OLYMPICS

    Saturday 12 August 2000 from 11 to 3. Lakemba – Railway Parade and Haldon Street.

    Transport to the festival: Lakemba station, or bus 487 from Canterbury station going along Canterbury Road; also parking facilities are nearby.

    Many cultural groups are performing – including dancing by Aboriginal, Maori, Samoan, Fijiian, Tongan, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Polish and Dutch groups. Singing from Chinese and
    Arabic groups and a rock band.

    Stage entertainment, street parade, food stalls, fashion parade, tai chi performance, children’s activities and information expo.

    CABRAMATTA STREET FESTIVAL

    Tuesday 12 September 2000 from 10 am to 10 pm. Hughes Street and Park Road.

    Transport to the festival: Cabramatta station on both the Regents Park and Granville lines.

    This festival will be like a Moon Festival organised with the various Asian communities in the area. Communities taking part on the day with food, music, dancing and other entertainment include the Vietnamese, Chinese, Laotian and Cambodian communities.

    The festival is related to the passing of the Olympic Torch Relay in Cabramatta.
    The Moon Festival includes fireworks, a street parade, music and dance, street entertainment, art exhibition and stalls.

    FAIRFIELD STREET FESTIVAL

    Tuesday 12 September 2000 from 12 to 5 pm. Ware Street – entertainment in evening in Spencer Street amphitheatre.

    Transport to the festival: within walking distance from Fairfield Station on the Granville line.

    The festival is being organised by Council and the City’s Festival of the Arts and will involve many ethnic communities in the area with performances from the Asian, Spanish, Assyrian and Lebanese communities.

    The festival is related to the passing of the Olympic Torch Relay in Fairfield.
    Big screen for Olympic events coverage and street parade. Stage performances, food and other stalls.

    HORNSBY OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY FESTIVAL

    Wednesday 13 September 2000 from 10 to 4. Pennant Hills Park, Pennant Hills - festival address is corner of Britannia Street and Cecil Avenue.

    Transport to the festival: Pennant Hills station is 5 minutes’ walk. Hopefully a shuttle bus will operate from the station. Also on site parking for $4.

    Olympic Torch Relay celebrations related. The Olympic Torch arrives around lunchtime.
    Featuring singer Christine Anu. Also Didgeridoo playing. Other entertainment including from Cherrybrook Chinese Community. Cuisine from Turkey, Lebanon, India, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Market stalls, art and craft exhibition, and animal displays.

    THE KOGARAH 2000 OLYMPIC STREET FESTIVAL

    Saturday 2 September 2000 from 9 to 4. Railway Parade (main street).

    Transport to the festival: Kogarah Station from the city and buses 476/477 from Rockdale Station. Buses also from Hurstville and Ramsgate.

    Cultural groups participating in the festival include Polynesian, Macedonian, Russian, Spanish, South American, Irish, Scots, Greek and Caribbean.

    A colourful street parade with lots of stalls, food, music and dance, free rides for children, as well as some unique ‘Kogarah style’ Olympic events followed by demonstration sports.

    LEIGHHARDT COUNCIL’S ‘STREETS ALIVE’

    Especially morning of Thursday 14 September 2000 and Friday and Saturday 15 to 16 September at 5 to 10 pm. Located at Norton Street in Leichhardt.

    Transport to the festival: bus route 440 or any bus along Parramatta Road passing Norton Street.

    The festival is related to the passing of the Olympic Torch Relay in Leichhardt on 14 September with breakfast and stage dancers at the Town Hall. On 15 and 16 September wandering dancers, musicians and poets, and street markets.

    LIVERPOOL COUNCIL FESTIVAL OF NATIONS

    Sunday 10 September 2000 from 10 am on. Macquarie Street including Macquarie Mall. Focus of some events is intersection with Moore Street.

    Transport to the festival: Liverpool Station is very near.

    Indian and other cultural performances.

    Fireworks, cultural performances and entertainment. Stalls include food/public information.

    MARRICKVILLE FESTIVAL 2000 : MANY CULTURES - ONE COMMUNITY

    Sunday 10 September 2000 from 11 to 5. Marrickville Road between Victoria and Illawarra Roads.

    Transport to the festival: Marrickville station is 5 minutes’ walk and buses 423, 425 and 426.

    Ethnic communities participating include Irish, Lebanese, Greek, Italian, Mexican, Cuban, Brasilian, Arabic speaking, African, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Laotian and Vietnamese.
    Also Aboriginal performances and displays.
    Music and dance performances, and street theatre. Food and information stalls, exercises, children’s area.

    PARRAMATTA COUNCIL: ‘MANY CULTURES – ONE COMMUNITY’

    The street festival focus is the whole Olympic period. A street festival will run from 15 September to 1 October and includes a special multicultural aspect. There will be 4 live sites overall for Olympic activities : Church Street at the intersection of George Street; Prince Alfred
    Park; Parramatta Mall; and Town Hall.

    Transport to the festival: Parramatta station is 5 minutes’ walk from the festival area.

    Ethnic communities participating in the multicultural aspect of the festival include Chinese, Indian, Sri Lankan, New Zealander, Fijiian, Philippino, Vietnamese, Korean, Lebanese and Italian.

    The main focus for the ‘multicultural festival’ will be Church and George Streets. From 11 to 1 every day from 15 September to 1 October the stage set up there will feature multicultural entertainment complemented by ethnic and information stalls. The Prince Alfred site will also feature multicultural entertainment.

    PENRITH VALLEY MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL “ KEEP YOUR CULTURE ALIVE”

    Saturday 16 September 2000 from 10 to 4. High Street.

    Transport to the festival: Penrith station.

    Stage and street performances, food, arts and crafts and cultural display stalls.

    WILLOUGHBY CITY STREET FAIR 2000

    Saturday 9 September 2000 from 10 to 4. Victoria Avenue and Chatswood Mall in Chatswood.

    Transport to the festival: the best option is rail to Chatswood Station with trains from north and south every 10 minutes. The bus interchange is well served by buses – ring 131500 for details. Parking in Westfield and Chatswood Chase shopping centres.

    Ethnic communities participating in planning and/or performing during the festival include particularly the Armenian, Italian, Chinese and Japanese communities; and also the Korean, Taiwanese, Iranian and Croatian, African, Spanish and Indian communities.

    Two entertainment stages, roving musical entertainment and multicultural performances, over 100 community and commercial stalls, multicultural food court and free children’s activities.
