Athletics has featured at every Olympic Games, both ancient and modern, and attracts more participants from more countries than any other sport. The Sydney Olympic Games will see around 2000 athletes (1300 men and 700 women) competing in 46 medal events.

Athletics features track and field and road events for men and women. There will be nine days of athletics competition, from 22 September to 1 October, with all track and field events being held inside the Olympic Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park.

The marathons start at North Sydney and finish inside the Olympic Stadium, while the road walk events will finish at the Olympic Stadium.
