Athletes from more than 200 countries went for gold during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Olympic Games Opening Ceremony began at the Olympic Stadium at Homebush Bay at 6:00pm on 15 September 2000 (Sydney time – see our Visitors Toolkit for time conversion). The Games concluded with the Closing Ceremony on 1 October 2000. Olympic competition featured 28 sports, including Women’s Water Polo, Taekwondo and Triathlon which made their Olympic debuts.

The Paralympic Games began with the Opening Ceremony at the Olympic Stadium on 18 October 2000 and conclude with the Closing Ceremony on 29 October 2000. During Paralympic competition, athletes competed in 18 sports.
